The Backfire Effect is a form of confirmation bias that only applies to [[Unexamined assumptions|deeply-held beliefs]]. When people are shown evidence they are wrong, they tend to believe in their original position even more. It doesn't matter if people trusted the source of the evidence.
This effect shows that evidence and data very rarely changes people's minds. ==We have to make arguments against people's deeply-held beliefs more personal and emotional== because that has the best chance of helping us feel the [[Empathy]] we need to help us see the world from a drastically different viewpoint.
